Talks on to acquire Reconnaissance Aircraft, Navy Chief

New Delhi, April 19, 2008: Contract negotiations for the acquisition of maritime reconnaissance aircraft by the Indian Navy may be finalised soon, Navy Chief Admiral Suresh Mehta said today.

"The process is going on. We are looking into the nitty-gritty and reading between the lines... we hope to finish it soon," Mehta, who is also the Chairman of the Chiefs of Staff Committee, said here.

WIL bags orders from ISRO and Indian Navy

Mumbai, April 17, 2008: Walchandnagar Industries (WIL), an engineering company, has bagged two prestigious orders, worth around Rs 150 crore from the Indian Navy and Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO).

WIL has been closely associated with Navy and ISRO and has partnered these organisations of national importance in producing highly critical and sophisticated components.

India's L&T to build New Port

New Delhi, April 16, 2008: India's private-sector defence giant, Larsen & Toubro (L&T), is setting up a new port facility in the southern state of Tamil Nadu.

The facility will be able to handle military ships including submarines, a senior L&T official said. The company is already building the hull of India's stealthy nuclear submarine, the Advanced Technology Vehicle.

U.S., India to talk Maritime Security

New Delhi, March 25, 2008: Navy Secretary Donald Winter is due to arrive here Wednesday to discuss maritime cooperation with Indian Defence Secretary Vijay Singh and Indian Navy Adm. Suresh Mehta, Indian Defence Ministry sources said. A proposal to jointly monitor nearby sea routes will be discussed, the sources said.

India, Qatar seek to expand naval ties

Dubai, March 19, 2008: The Indian Navy has offered to train naval personnel of Qatar, while seeking to expand technical, military and manpower cooperation with the Gulf state.

"We have offered our training facilities to Qatar. In the past, a few naval personnel have been trained in India," Vice Admiral Jagjit Singh Bedi, Flag Officer Commander-in-Chief of India's Western Naval Command, who is in Doha as part of the first Doha International Maritime Defence Exhibition and Conference (DIMDEX), said.

Indian Coast Guard wants to add 5 patrol vessels

New Delhi, Mar 18, 2008: As part of its effort to increase its fleet to 217 ships from the current level of 76 ships, the Indian Coast Guard is on a global hunt to procure five offshore patrol vessels for $100 million. The request for information has been sent to Finncantieri of Italy and DCN International of France.

Boeing set to bag order for 8 patrol aircraft

New Delhi, Mar 17, 2008: Major global defence aircraft supplier, US-based Boeing may be poised to bag the Indian order for eight maritime patrol planes.

Industry officials expressed confidence that the Boeing P-8i Poseidons long-range maritime reconnaissance (LRMR) patrol aircraft would be selected over their rivals, in what could signal a further strengthening of India’s defence engagement with America.

BAE Systems presents the future of unmanned naval vehicles at DIMDEX

UAE, Mar 17, 2008: The Talisman Unmanned Underwater Vehicle (UUV) system developed by BAE Systems makes its debut at the Doha International Maritime and Defence Exhibition and Conference (DIMDEX) in Qatar.

Talisman is a family of maritime UUVs using common technology from air and land systems. Its design concept is that it is an underwater 'truck' capable of carrying a range of application specific mission payloads. Payload capacity is currently 500 kg. Talisman has already been demonstrated and integrated into the Nautis Combat management System fitted to the UK Hunt and Sandown class Mine Countermeasures Vessels (MCMVs).

Russia to start delivery of MiG 29-K fighters in May: Indian Naval Chief

Moscow (PTI), Mar 14, 2008: Russia will start in May the delivery of MiG 29-K fighters to the Indian Navy for deployment on Gorshkov aircraft carrier after its induction, Naval Chief Admiral Suresh Mehta said here on Friday.

A team of Indian naval pilots will be arriving in Russia for a five-month training programme, Mahta said after visiting the MiG plant, which is assembling the fighters for the deployment on Gorshkov after its induction as INS Vikramaditya in 2012.

Barak good, no shortage, says Navy Chief Mehta

New Delhi, Mar 11, 2008 - Naval Chief Admiral Suresh Mehta on Monday said Barak missiles have ‘proved themselves’. He, however, said that fresh supplies were held up because of the investigation of bribery in the purchase of the missiles.

"The Barak missiles have performed on board naval warships," he said but added it was for the government to probe if there were any wrongdoing. The Naval chief said since their induction on board front-line naval warships, the Navy had carried out 30 tests of the anti-missile weapon system against surface-to-air missiles. “They have proved themselves. All except the first one were direct hits," the Naval chief said.

India reconciles to price hike for Gorshkov

New Delhi, Mar 11, 2008 - India has reconciled to a price hike for procurement of Russian carrier Admiral Gorshkov and the government has constituted an experts committee to work out the increase, Naval Chief Sureesh Mehta on Tuesday said.

"There will be some price hike. We need to pay extra amount and whatever amount is due as per contracts we will pay," Mehta, who had in the past opposed any renegotiations with Russia on a price hike demand, said.

BUDGET - Maritime sector seeks tax breaks, subsidy

Mumbai, Feb 21, 2008 - India's maritime sector has sought tax breaks and changes in laws in the upcoming federal budget, besides faster disbursement of subsidies and implementation of port projects to help the industry.

The Indian National Shipowners' Association (INSA) has highlighted several issues such as taxes on profit from sale of vessels, on interest income from compulsory reserve, on input services and seafarer's income.

UK to supply four Sea Harriers to Indian Navy

New Delhi, Feb 16, 2008 - The United Kingdom said it would supply four Sea Harriers air frames to the Indian Navy to cannabalize them for spares for use in India's fast depleting Jump Jet squadrons.

"We have negotiated a deal with the Navy for supplying four air frames of Sea Harriers from our naval surplus," Hugh Thomas, a top British Defence Ministry official, told newsmen at a recent international trade fair.

Japan concerned over Chinese Navy build up in Indian Ocean

New Delhi, Mar 11, 2008 - Japan is very much concerned over the alarming build up by the Chinese Navy in the Indian Ocean and its military presence in Asian countries like Pakistan and Myanmar. This was stated by Japanese defence scholars here today. Professors Marie Yoshioka Izuyama and Eiichi Katahara of National Institute for Defence Studies, Tokyo, said Japan is also planning to strengthen its missile Defence Capabilities to counter possible missile threats from North Korea.

India probes possible flaw in its sea monitoring

Sri Lanka, Mar 08, 2008 - Indian defence authorities have launched a full-scale investigation into how its coast guard and the Navy failed to track down the trawler with 71 illegal migrants on board which drifted to Sri Lankan shores via Indian territory.

It was rescued by the Sri Lankan Navy earlier this week.

A highly placed diplomatic official told the Daily Mirror the authorities would investigate as to how the trawler went unnoticed despite regular patrolling in its waters by the Indian Navy warship, Coast Guard vessels and surveillances air craft.

After Everest and South Pole, Indian Navy sets out to conquer North Pole

New Delhi, Mar 10, 2008 - After successfully conquering Mount Everest and skiing to the South Pole, the Indian Navy is now headed for the North Pole - aiming to achieve the unique distinction of becoming the first ever organisation in the world to conquer all the three poles.

‘There’s the North Pole and there’s the South Pole, and the Everest being the highest point in the world is also considered a pole, team leader Commander Satyabrata Dam told reporters here of the 10-member expedition’s aim.

New Delhi, Feb 18, 2008 - With 43 companies, France was the second largest foreign exhibitor at an international defence exposition held here recently and it has taken a very different approach from its aggressive competitors at the event.

In fact, words like 'aggression' and 'marketing' cause Jean-Marie Carnet, director general of GICAN, an umbrella grouping of 129 French companies engaged in the fabrication of naval ships and armaments, to raise his eyebrows.

New Delhi, Feb 19, 2008: India is experiencing a time of strong economic growth and is likely to see important government programmes in Defence and Aeronautics sectors in the next 10-15 years.

Boeing's a finalist in India's navy competition

Feb 20, 2008: The Indian navy has named Boeing's Renton-built P-8A maritime patrol aircraft as a finalist in a competition to supply it with eight new submarine-hunting airplanes.

The P-8A is a militarized version of Boeing's popular 737 airliner. The Boeing plane won a U.S. Navy competition to replace a Lockheed-built turboprop plane that serves the sub-hunting function now.

Lockheed sees India as top Asia arms market

SINGAPORE, Feb 19, 2008: Lockheed Martin believes that India could be the largest defense market in Asia with $20 billion in possible air force, navy and communications contracts over the next decade, an executive said on Tuesday.

"For Lockheed Martin, the potential market in India is probably the largest in Asia Pacific," Richard Kirkland, Lockheed Martin's President South Asia, told Reuters here on Tuesday.
